2 State-of-the-art-cancer-centers

The Lansing region is home to two new state-of-the-art cancer centers: Sparrow's Herbert-Herman Cancer Center opened in 2018 and the McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Campus in 2022.

Sparrow Health System

Headquartered in Lansing, Sparrow Health System opened the new $64 million Herbert-Herman Cancer Center in 2017. With 10,000 employees system-wide contributing to $1.3 Billion in annual revenue, Sparrow collaborates with the Mayo Clinic and is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in mid-Michigan.

McLaren Health Care

McLaren Greater Lansing is a growing health system founded in Michigan in 1981, employing more than 16,000 employees system-wide with $5 Billion in annual revenue. McLaren recently built a new $500 million state-of-the-art hospital campus in partnership with Michigan State University.

Spun from MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), Lansing-based Niowave is recognized as an international medical isotopes leader and is one of four companies actively manufacturing medical isotopes in the US. MSU’s leading nuclear physics program is fundamentally strong due to a long history and commitment to research and leading facilities including:

  • National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (since 1978)

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), recently opened as of early 2022. The $770 million investment in FRIB results in the world’s next great nuclear research center including the most powerful machine of its type in the world, revolutionizing the way nuclear research is conducted and expediting new discoveries and breakthroughs.

  • Michigan has a medical device manufacturing workforce of more than 12,000 people — ranking in the top 10 nationally.

The Lansing region’s strong biotechnology industry is led by renowned biotechnology businesses Neogen Corporation and Emergent Biosolutions, Inc., with applications for products dedicated to food and animal safety (Neogen) and medical countermeasures for biological and chemical threats and emerging infectious diseases (Emergent).

MSU’s Corporate Research Park is home to the Michigan Biotechnology Institute (MBI) which provides technical assistance and research support to de-risk research and development investment.
