Lansing Region Identified as One of America’s Most Educated Communities

Lansing-East Lansing Places Ahead of Chicago, Des Moines and Other Key Metros 

LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan statistical area (MSA) was recently named as one of America’s most educated cities by personal finance web service WalletHub, landing at No. 22 on their annual Most and Least Educated Cities index.

WalletHub compared the 150 most populated U.S. MSAs across two key dimensions: Educational Attainment and Quality of Education and Attainment Gap, which were then evaluated on 11 key metrics including:

  1. 1. Share of adults aged 25 years & older with a high school diploma or higher
    2. Share of adults aged 25 years & older with at least some college experience or an associate degree or higher
    3. Share of adults Aged 25 years & older with a bachelor's degree or higher
    4. Share of adults Aged 25 years & older with a graduate or professional degree
    5. Quality of public school system
    6. Average quality of universities
    7. Enrolled students in top 951 universities per capita
    8. Number of summer learning opportunities per capita
    9. Racial education gap
    10. Gender education gap
    11. Education equality index score

The Lansing region produces around 18,000 college graduates each year by way of top ranked Big 10 research institution Michigan State University (12,800) and top ranked technical college Lansing Community College (2,900) and is supported by a host of additional college and K-12 programs. In a statewide comparison, the Lansing region has been #1 in the state across five years for educational attainment among 25-64 year old’s with 43 percent of the population holding an associate degree or higher.

Lansing Community College is the No. 2 technical college in the nation. In the future there’s only one direction for us to move on this list, and that’s up!”
