New FedEx facility to open in Delta Township

Posted: October 10, 2012 - 9:00 AM

DELTA TWP. — A new 147,000-square-foot FedEx distribution center is slated to open in Delta Township next summer, bringing dozens of new jobs.

The $7 million center will replace a smaller, landlocked building in Watertown Township. Ed Reed, Delta Township’s economic development director, said 80 workers will be transferred to the new site and an additional 20 to 50 jobs will be created when it opens in 2013.

“I’m glad FedEx is staying in the region and doing so well they’re able to expand and create new jobs,” said Delta Township Supervisor Ken Fletcher.

The site in the township’s industrial zone on Canal Road south of Mt. Hope Road was chosen because of its access to major highways, proximity to customers’ distribution centers and a strong local labor force, said Erin Truxal, public relations manager for FedEx Ground, a division of package shipper Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx Corp.

“The new facility is part of a nationwide network expansion to boost daily package volume capacity and further enhance the speed and service capabilities of the Fed-Ex Ground network,” Truxal said.

It is one of 12 FedEx Ground hubs opened since 2005 and the more than 500 expanded or relocated facilities. Truxal said the companywide upgrades have sped up delivery by at least a day in more than half of the United States.
