McLaren Shows Why the Future of MedTech Is in Michigan’s Health Core
Collaborative cancer care. Innovative diagnostic medicine. Pioneering robotic surgery.
McLaren Health Care demonstrates what’s possible when a major health system, a top-tier research university, and a supportive business environment converge in the Lansing region.
McLaren is a $7.3 billion, fully integrated health care delivery system committed to quality, evidence-based patient care and cost efficiency. McLaren opened the 240-bed McLaren Greater Lansing hospital in 2022 and operates 12 hospitals across the state, as well as ambulatory surgery centers, imaging centers, a 640-member primary and specialty care physician network, pharmacy services, a clinical laboratory network, and more. The McLaren system operates the Karmanos Cancer Network, Michigan’s largest network of cancer centers and providers, anchored by the Karmanos Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.
Regional Collaborations Improve Patient Care
McLaren Greater Lansing’s proximity to Michigan State University has opened the doors to several partnership opportunities with MSU Health Care—including collaborative expert cancer care and research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
The brightest minds in cancer come together at the Center to provide expert medical oncology care to the community, including radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and a team of nurse patient navigators who help patients every step of the way in their cancer journey.
In addition to local care, patients can tap into the larger network of resources coordinated by McLaren, including increased access to advanced cancer care, multiple clinical trials, innovative treatments, and genetic counseling.
Other McLaren/MSU Health Care collaborations that benefit the local community include the Izzo Family Medical Center, home to a joint venture imaging center (MSU Health Care at McLaren Greater Lansing Outpatient Imaging Center) and an internal medicine practice (McLaren Greater Lansing Multi-Specialty Clinic) that is operated by McLaren Greater Lansing residents and attending physicians treating a variety of patients who need internal medicine, OBGYN, or general surgery care.
McLaren and MSU also partner for teaching, research, and clinical trials.
Located on the southern edge of the campus of Michigan State University, McLaren Greater Lansing sponsors more than 100 residents and fellows across eight programs. McLaren is a proud affiliate of both the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. This affiliation allows McLaren residents to train within a community hospital environment with the academic connectivity and oversight of a world-class university.
Digital Innovations Herald Transformative Impact
To stay at the forefront of medical innovation, McLaren Health Care launched a full-scale digital pathology program, an innovation and breakthrough in diagnostic medicine that significantly elevates and enhances McLaren system hospitals’ speed, accuracy, and ability to detect and predict diseases.
On July 1, 2025, pathology services at McLaren hospitals transitioned to high-resolution digital imaging, meaning traditional glass slides will be scanned into ultra-detailed, high-resolution digital images that can be securely accessed remotely by pathologists across the health system, reviewed collaboratively, and integrated into electronic health records—streamlining diagnostics, accelerating care, and unlocking new opportunities for collaboration and precision.
This transition to digital pathology improves access to expert review, accelerates turnaround times, and enables the ability to leverage artificial intelligence and remote consultation, which eliminates delays caused by courier transport, and connects subspecialists regardless of location.
McLaren is also pioneering AI mapping for robotic surgery in order to develop more precise procedure planning, reduce radiation exposure for both the patient and surgical team (by up to 50 percent), and decrease pre-operative prep time.
A Driver of Innovation for Michigan’s Health Core
With compassion for the community, a vision for ground-breaking collaborations and possibilities, McLaren is improving the health of the Lansing region through innovations and partnerships that Michigan’s Health Core applauds.
