XG Sciences Expands in Vevay Township

In 2018, XG Sciences (XGS), a market leader in design and manufacture of nanomaterials, expanded operations into Vevay Township. Incorporated in 2006, XGS was formed for the purpose of commercializing technology to produce graphene nanoplatelets used for energy storage, aerospace, automotive, industrial, and consumer markets.

The new, 64,000 square foot facility houses production in support of ongoing product platforms and capacity requirements. With an up to $15.3 million investment, XGS will add the capital equipment and infrastructure needed to support existing and future customer demands. In addition, the expansion will create up to 40 new jobs in Vevay Township and up to 36 new additional Michigan-based jobs to XGS operations.

The project was awarded a $520,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant by the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF). XGS chose Michigan over a competing site in Ohio. In addition to MSF funds, Vevay Township also offered support to the project in the form of property tax abatement resulting in new general fund revenue to Vevay Township and Michigan.

Community Impact

This project brings 40 new jobs to Vevay Township and up to 36 new additional Michigan-based jobs to XGS operations. XGS chose the township over a competing site in Ohio, thus emphasizing the Lansing region’s competitive advantage in regional site selection processes. Revenue captured through the project’s property tax abatement will result in new general fund revenue to Vevay Township and Michigan.

In addtion, keeping a leading industry manufacturer in the area provides support and access to resources for key high-tech and manufacturing clusters in the region, further strengthening opportunities for industry growth and innovation.
