Niowave Expands with New Build in Port Lansing District

Advances Region’s High Tech and Medical Innovation Sectors, Creates 70 New High-Wage Jobs

Lansing, Mich. (May 21, 2026) – Niowave Inc., a national leader in superconducting linear accelerators and advanced radioisotope technology, is pleased to announce the expansion of its operations with a new facility in the Capital Region International Airport (LAN). This major project will create 70 new high-wage jobs and represents a significant $65 million investment that elevates the Lansing region’s position as Michigan’s Health Core and a hub for advanced technology, research, and manufacturing.

“Today’s expansion really is a game changer for Niowave, the Lansing area, and the state of Michigan,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “More cancer patients will be able to count on life-saving medicines and therapies. This cements Lansing’s leadership in biotech and life sciences and how we’re using Michigan grit and innovation to think, build, and lead our future.”

“Niowave’s expansion strengthens our ability to deliver life-saving medical isotopes to the patients who rely on them, while also advancing Lansing’s position as a premier hub for next-generation technology,” said Niowave’s CEO Mike Zamiara. “This investment will create high-quality jobs and support local talent pathways that keep opportunity here in Michigan. We are appreciative of our regional partners, whose commitment and shared vision have been essential in making this project possible.”

“The Lansing region continues to excel as one of the leading knowledge-based and advanced manufacturing hubs in America,” said Bob Trezise, president and CEO, Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP). “We are certainly one of the major particle accelerator capitals in North America. Not only does the Niowave project represent great jobs and new investment that will help provide quality municipal services to our residents, but Niowave’s innovative work literally helps save cancer patients’ lives. That is economic development at its best.”

“Niowave’s expansion is a tremendous win for our region and a great example of how strategic partnerships drive economic growth,” said Nicole Noll-Williams, president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Authority. “As a company developing cutting-edge technologies right here on airport property and in the mid-Michigan region, Niowave is helping to attract new investment, support high-skilled jobs, and strengthen mid-Michigan’s position as a hub for innovation. The Capital Region Airport Authority is proud to support this growth, and we look forward to the continued economic development and community benefits it will bring.”

As part of this expansion, Niowave will increase its production capacity for superconducting components used in medical isotope production, clean energy research, and national security applications. The company’s continued growth highlights mid-Michigan’s unique strengths in engineering, physics, and high-tech manufacturing, driven by a skilled workforce and proximity to Michigan State University and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).

The expansion is expected to create new opportunities for local talent, particularly graduates from Michigan State University and Lansing Community College, while attracting additional investment and innovation to Lansing’s airport region. To help facilitate the project, the Port Lansing Next Michigan Development Corporation (NMDC) approved the establishment of an Industrial Development District and granted Niowave a Public Act 198 Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption.

“Niowave’s expansion in the Port Lansing region is a welcome investment for DeWitt Township. This project supports high-wage job growth, strengthens our local economy, and reinforces the steady momentum we have been working toward in this area,” said Brian Ross, Supervisor, DeWitt Charter Township. “LEAP’s leadership and coordination were critical in helping move this project forward. Their ability to connect local and state partners, support project needs, and help navigate the process played an important role in making this investment possible.”

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor highlighted the region’s unique talent pipeline. “Lansing has many different incredible industries, and we are proud to be leaders in the medical tech and high-tech sectors. We have the talent and skilled workers needed for these unique businesses that provide good-paying jobs. Lansing is uniquely positioned, with resources like MSU, Lansing Community College, and other training institutions, to not just attract talent for these companies but also to grow the talent right here.”

“The Niowave expansion project moves the Capital Region into the Hi-Tech era.

This expanded operation will become a showcase that will attract other 21st century industries to the Lansing area. Creating high-paying jobs and expanding economic opportunities for the people in Central Michigan,” said Bob Showers, Chair of Port Lansing Next Michigan Development Corporation Board and Clinton County District 5 Commissioner.

Construction on the new facility is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with the site expected to be fully operational by fall 2027.

Founded in 2005, Niowave designs and manufactures superconducting electron accelerators and related systems serving medical, defense, and industrial markets worldwide. The company is recognized for its innovation in radioisotope production, helping strengthen domestic supply chains critical to health care and national security.

The “Port Lansing District” is an official, independent economic development zone governed by a Next Michigan Development Corporation and Board of Directors that is administered by LEAP as part of its contract with Clinton County. The Port Lansing NMDC was created by the City of Lansing and DeWitt Township approaching 15 years ago as part of a revenue sharing arrangement between the municipalities via a Public Act (PA) 425 conditional land transfer agreement. It was empowered by a statewide program created by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and supported by the Capital Regional Airport Authority.

The Port Lansing Board of Directors, chaired by Bob Showers, approved a PA 198 tax abatement for the project. Additional state incentives and program support are pending final review and approval at the MEDC. LEAP, the Lansing EDC, and MEDC worked to put this necessary incentive package together on behalf of Port Lansing and Niowave. The airport conducted critical work in a land lease arrangement to enable the project on its federally regulated property.
