Certus Medical Grows the MedTech Industry in East Lansing

Certus Medical Chooses East Lansing, Michigan to Expand Medical Device Distribution

East Lansing, Mich.(April 11, 2024)Certus Medical LLC has announced its strategic expansion into the Michigan market. Headquartered in Indianapolis, the company recently solidified its presence by acquiring a European competitor, marking a significant milestone in its growth trajectory. This expansion not only signifies Certus Medical’s commitment to innovation and market expansion, but also underscores the flourishing landscape of the MedTech industry in the Lansing Region. Certus Medical is poised to fortify its foothold in East Lansing, a growing hub for technological innovation and economic development.

The company’s investment of approximately $202,000 over the next five years reflects its confidence in the region’s potential for growth and prosperity. Certus Medical plans to onboard 25 new employees across various roles, including administrative support, logistics, production, sales, and professional management. The average wage across all new positions is $65.30 per hour — further emphasizing the company’s commitment to local job creation and economic empowerment.

“We are immensely grateful for the support and incentives provided by the state of Michigan,” said Zac Gerdts, principal, Certus Medical. “These resources will be instrumental in accelerating our economic development initiatives, enabling us to expand our operations and create meaningful opportunities for both our company and the community at large.”

The new East Lansing office will manage business development and the nationwide corporate sales and distribution of its surgical implants and knee replacements products. The company sees Michigan as a new opportunity market as the acquisition drives new growth. Capital Area Michigan Works! has actively been working with the company to support workforce development efforts.

“We are grateful to LEAP for their efforts in bringing Certus Medical LLC to East Lansing. This addition to the business landscape infuses new investment in our community, which helps us continue to grow and expand our workforce,” said City Manager of East Lansing Robert Belleman.

In 2020, a MedTech advisory group was formed to propel the life sciences industry forward in the Lansing Region, bringing together key stakeholders ranging from CEOs of startups to leaders of large corporations, academic institutions like Michigan State University (MSU), and government entities such as the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and MichBio.

LEAP has also been working actively with the Economic Development Administration since 2021 through a grant of over $1 million dollars to grow the MedTech industry in the region. This collaborative effort aims to foster innovation, drive research and development, and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. Certus Medical’s expansion not only contributes to the growth of the MedTech sector but also reinforces Michigan’s position as a pivotal hub for medical innovation, with East Lansing at its forefront.

“Congratulations to the city of East Lansing as LEAP has landed an important new MedTech company from outside of the region. We are so appreciative to Certus for their confidence in our blossoming MedTech and knowledge-based, growing regional economy,” said Bob Trezise, president and CEO of Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) . “LEAP’s MedTech initiative is taking hold helping to build a knowledge-based economy, along with our continued advanced manufacturing re-shoring efforts, building one of the nation’s most diverse and advanced economies of the future. We also thank Governor Whitmer, the MEDC and our great federal legislators, Congresswoman Slotkin, and Senator Peters and Senator Stabenow, who support the EDA funding that seeded our MedTech initiative with a $1.1 million grant three years ago.”

To ensure this and future investments are made in the Lansing Region, LEAP assisted Certus Medical in accessing business development support programs. Certus Medical is slated to receive state support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s business development program totaling $125,000.
