Program aims to strengthen small towns and communities across Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties

The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) is excited to announce the Small Town Enhancement Grant Program, a transformative initiative aimed at improving and revitalizing key areas of small towns across the Lansing region. With a generous funding pool of $100,000, this program seeks to provide targeted assistance for enhancing public spaces, including historic mainstreet areas, community gathering places, and public parks.

“Thriving places help define a community’s economic vibrancy – LEAP’s Small Town Enhancement Grant Program will help our communities invest in opportunities that directly contribute to a strong quality of life, help attract and retain talent, and grow stronger local economies,” said Rachel Elsinga, community development manager at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

The Small Town Enhancement Grant Program is open to municipal governments, Downtown Development Authorities (DDAs), Local Development Finance Authorities (LDFAs), small businesses, and nonprofits. Partnerships are strongly encouraged, fostering collaboration and maximizing the impact of the projects. Municipal support is required for all applications.

Program Timeline and Key Dates:

• Announcement: February 22, 2024
• Application Release: February 22, 2024
• Applications Due: April 15, 2024 at 5pm
• Award Announcements: Early May 2024

Eligible projects include permanent installations honoring small town history, public art initiatives, lighting enhancements, signage improvements, and building facade renovations. To be considered, applicants must demonstrate community impact, feasibility, creativity, and collaboration. Key requirements include project completion by the end of 2024, a permanent plaque acknowledging partners, and participation in a public unveiling event.

Awards will be announced in early May, with disbursement in three stages based on project progress. LEAP emphasizes the importance of thoughtful applications and encourages interested parties to take the time to build out their proposals completely for submission by the deadline.
